Description:
I installed KDE 4.1 by upgrading from KDE 3.x, then when i launched KDM with the rc.d script, it works fine, but when i log in to my account, it just shows the splashscreen, and when it finishes it just shows a wallpaper with many squares, but no taskbar, nor icons nor anything else! I am able althoug to use Alt-F2, however I cannot launch anything within it, and when i try to use Ctrl-Esc it manages to pop-up the process manager, which shows three processes, which are plasma, X and the Alt-F2 service (which name i don't remember), NOTHING else at all...
I also tried to fix this by removing my .kde .kde4 and .kderc folders/files in my home folder; I did also try to uninstall completly KDE and install it again but no luck...

Additional info:
* package version(s)
Latest KDE 4.1 from extra

Just in case, I never voted for this bug, I don't know wtf happened. I just followed a link on bbs (http://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?do=details&task_id=11136), I came to that page and I saw 3 votes, including mine.

Sorry for the reporter, I have no idea about your issue.

Did you try using a complete nw user account? Which graphics driver do you use? Try using the one provided by xorg or even vesa.

I'm using an Intel 845G integrated graphics card which worked fine with KDE 4.1 before (I used KDEmod4, OpenSuSe 11, etc), but since this upgrade it seems not to work with the same config (I'm using the xf86 "intel" driver). And, yes, I tried by creating a new user account, but it works exactly the same. Let me check if changing to vesa fixes this.

Have you tried the inittab approach? Like setting in /etc/inittab the default level to 5:

id:5:initdefault:

And setting the correct path to kdm:

x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon

Maybe this way KDE start correctly for you too...

I have that same graphics card and have no problems, but I run without effects because they're too slow for this card. Try Alt+F2, type systemsettings and see if you can disable the effects (in the Desktop section). Maybe that helps too.

Try disabling compositing

in ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc, add

[Compositing]
Enabled=false

See if that helps. If you really want effects, I suggest using Compiz.

Is this still valid? I don't think this is a packaging bug. I have never had such problems.

Still no luck. I tried by changing the graphics card to a nvidia geforce4 440, but still no luck. Changing driver to VESA fails the same.

Oh, and it's not a problem with compositing.
