Description:

flex needs m4, but it is not in dependencies. Result in "flex: fatal internal error, exec failed" w/o m4.

What triggers the above error message? I would like to replicate the behavior.

Just running flex without m4.

$ cat << EOF > test.l
%%
test printf("ee");
EOF

$ sudo pacman -R m4
$ flex -o test.c test.l; echo $?
flex: fatal internal error, exec failed
1
$ sudo pacman -S m4
$ flex -o test.c test.l; echo $?
0
