nss-mdns is a pluggable nsswitch module for glibc. This module doesn't do anything, unless you configure nsswitch.conf to use it. Since installing this makes difference on your system, your system has been configured to use it. Leaving it out on your system breaks DNS resolving for applications on your system, but not on other systems who don't have nss-mdns configured in their nsswitch.conf. My systems work fine without this package installed, so this is not a bug.
