After upgrading to gst-plugins-0.8.2-1, all gstreamer-based applications (including the volume mixer) fail attempting to load the osssink or volume elements. I'm not sure why this is, but its a pretty mission-critical problem for most of us gstreamer users.

Upon further inspection (of the gst-plugins.install file), it seems that I needed to run gst-compprop. And for some reason when I upgraded, that didn't get run. So its fixed now, but this might still be valid (as to why it wasn't run on upgrade).

it was due to gst-ffmpeg that isn't compatible any more with gstreamer so it now conflicts with it ;)
also gstreamer itself will run gst-compprop now
