abs > /dev/null
only the messages sent to STDOUT will be surpressed, STDERR will still be output'ed. (So you'll still see error messages).
During my experiments, I found another bug: the abs script outputs every message to STDERR while it should only do that with error messages. I've posted a bugreport under
FS#10686
