Is this x86_64 specific? I can not replicate on i686 and my sound card is not yet supported on my x86_64 machine so I can't test there.

Do you get this when you play the video straight from mplayer?

no mplayer and gmplayer works fine.

By default I get the same behaviour on i686. But I'm pretty sure however that this is a feature (albeit an annoying one) and not exactly a bug. The good news is that this behaviour can be turned off (only tested on i686, but I think it should work on x86_64).

Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Mplayer Software Volume Controle Enabled

If/when that setting is enabled Gnome MPlayer should manage its own volume independent from system volume settings. (Note: You may need to restart Gnome MPlayer for the setting to take effect.)

I'd personally like to see the default config turn this option on (I hate media players that f*ck with my system wide volume settings), but I suppose that's something to be passed upstream.

Your tip worked thanks. This is a very annoying feature.

Glad it worked. And you certainly won't get any argument from me about how annoying it is.

I am closing this. You should report it in the upstream bug tracker if you would like the defaults changed.
