XFCE on Arch currently has very little in the way of support for suspend/hibernation. Ubuntu and several other distros use a patch that makes the logout screen show suspend and hibernate options; IMHO this patch would make XFCE significantly less annoying to use on laptops.

Granted, I'm not sure how the patch fits with Arch's KISS philosophy; but I, for one, don't see anything overcomplicated or gratuitously hacky about it.

Do you have screenshots available for before and after applying the patch? I've seen what Ubuntu does to the GNOME logout dialog and I'm not amused with that. I don't know what they did to the xfce dialog this time though.

Hmm, the patch is in the xfce4-session ubuntu package. The patch itself is huge: it adds the buttons, adds some preferences to the config file, adds several widgets to the configuration program to make these settings, and additionally hooks into dbus to check various things. I don't think it's wise to apply such a big unmaintainable patch to our xfce4-session package.

Agreed, to big. I'd rather encourage people to setup acpi handler for closing the lid or pushing the power button. Which is way cooler anyway IMHO.

Applications like gnome-power-manager also work in XFCE, so when there's a real need for a suspend/hibernate button, people can use that piece of software.
