Assigning to Jan, but I have a feeling this is an upstream issue.

Works fine here. Do you have another program running that captures these keys instead of passing them to gnome-settings-daemon?

I installed xbindkeys and keytouch to get the shortcuts working however they have already been uninstalled.

This is not longer an issue, i resolved it by deleting gnome config folders such as .config, .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome, .gnome2_private, .local, .metacity
