Python2.5 officially does not support the new Tk8.5, however this one is now in current.
there is an incompatibility which causes some problems, which could be reproduced as follows:

- start "idle" from commandline
- try to select some text with the mouse.. it does not work
- now try autocompletion, e.g.: "import sys" and then "sys.<TAB>" the popup window should appear, however the error is raised, look into the terminal

the problem can be easily fixed with the simple patch from a python bug report http://bugs.python.org/issue2693

  • Field changed: Category (Packages: Core → Packages: Extra)
  • Task assigned to Andreas Radke (AndyRTR)
Patches to fix compatibility errors due to the newness of our packages are generally ok.

Andy, any opinion?

This patch will fix Idle but it could cause breakage elsewhere. From the bug report:

"For Tk 8.4, the if clause is never invoked because Idle does not use any of the Tk 8.4 methods that return Tcl lists (luckily)."

It seems that any software that does use a call that returns a list will be broken.

Edit: except that this just patches Idle, so all should be fine.... oops!
