Hello,

a new version of Pidgin is out : 2.4.1.
Do you still have this problem with this new version ?
Do you have gtkspell installed, and which version ?

Thank you !

Works for me, doubtful this is an Arch bug if a bug at all. Ensure you have any necessary dictionaries installed, etc.

I have the same problem with pidgin 2.4.1

I have gtkspell and aspell both installed.

The reason is that it needs "aspell-en" package.... I installed aspell-en and now it works fine...maybe this should be a dependency.

Yep, getting the aspell-en fixed it for me as well, thanks! I'm not sure if I should close this issue now, or if it should wait until it's made a dependency (assuming that's the chosen course of action), so I'll leave it to those in charge.

As I said in my original comment (but may have been a bit unclear), you will have to install the necessary dictionary packages to get aspell to do its thing, even if you have aspell and gtkspell installed.

Just because you happened to need aspell-en doesn't mean my non-English speaking buddy will want it, so I'm not going to add a dependency on aspell-en. It is really up to you to get the languages and dictionaries you want in order to have spell-checking capability.
