Description:
I don't even know why we have this package, but that's besides the point. I don't think that this package should be a dependency of any package. Sure it can be an optional package, but it shouldn't be a dependency. Archlinux was supposed to be for experienced linux users and not have branding. I don't see the point of having links to the sites that www.archlinux.org itself links to. It's not hard to enter that url in the url bar. We definitely do not want users that are incapable of doing so. How did they even get the ISO in the first place?

A similar opinion was expressed on the bbs: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=24708. The suggested solution was to just "pacman -Rd archlinux-menus". I don't think that's acceptable since the package will be back on an upgrade anyway. Also the notion of having to remove packages from Archlinux is just sickening to me. That's not what Arch was meant to be like. It was supposed to be the distro where you install what you want, not remove what you don't want. I asked for opinions on the IRC channel and pretty much everyone agreed that it's a pointless package. Only one out of about 7 or 8 people thought it was useful. Running a google search will also produce a bunch of rants and various negative opinions of the package.

I don't want this to come off as a rant, but I suppose it is. I don't really use the gnome or KDE menues, but I am somehow irritated by the package whenever I see it. Please remove the dependency.

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  No longer a dependency. The package will be part of the gnome group on the next update though.

I personally find archlinux-menus quite convenient when using GNOME and with it very, very small size, I don't see the problem of including it.

Also, if you're not using GNOME or KDE, then you won't 'see' the menu anyway, except during upgrade, which happens very rarely anyway.

After some further thought and discussion, I have become convinced that archlinux-menus should not be a dependency. Instate a more desirable solution is to have the package included in each DE group. That way, the menus package is available to all user who need them (new users or not) and is easily removable for those who don't.

-1 from me. I like this package. It's a nice touch. As someone who has been using Arch for 4 months, I feel qualified to speak as a newcomer and give that perspective. When I came to Arch, I understood that I would be getting was software that was as vanilla as possible. When I installed Gnome, I was not surprised to see the crappy wallpaper, ugly icons and super-ugly gnome foot splash. Arch gave me something better than an "archified" desktop: something useful: a menu with links to Arch websites! I still use it quite often.

I can understand the argument about archlinux-menus not being a dependency; but it should remain a default.

(also, ubuntu doesn't have anything like it)

archlinux-menus will be in the gnome, kde and xfce groups on the next update and gnome-menus will have the dependency removed. The whole point of this bug is that people can remove the menu package by using pacman -Rd, but it's coming back on every gnome-menus upgrade.
