These rules exist in the default fontconfig configuration, they're just in split files. 60-latin.conf, 65-fonts-persion.conf and 65-nonlatin.conf contain the same rules. The only part that is not in the configuration is the bottom part of your config file, which touches the way chinese fonts are rendered.

Oh, yes, names of some fonts have changed their names, so we have to change them too. For example, we have ttf-arphic-uming and ttf-arphic-ukai in our extra repo, their name are AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni and AR PL ZenKai Uni now. And ttf-fireflysung is the same problem. Above two fonts are commonly used in Chinese. So I show an modified 65-nonlatin.conf -nonlatin.conf for your reference.

Sorry, here it is now.

After re-consider the situation, I think it's better to have a "special" chinese fonts configuration to make better display for Chinese but not possibly make worse for non-chinese users. Please check out the attachment for details. I hope it will be included in the next fontsconfig version, thanks very much.

I still have to take a look at this again. In the meanwhile someone else upgraded fontconfig to a newer release, so I don't have an overview of this one.

That someone was probably me, Jan - I think I picked up fontconfig because it was an orphaned dep of one of my apps, not necessarily because I know a lot about it. If you want it back, just say so.

In the meantime, I'll consider this request.

What's the status of this issue? Maybe the chinese definition file can be shipped but disabled by default?

Disable by default for sure (though even it's enable by default I think it's still harmless/useless if you don't use CJK fonts). I think I'd better give it a little modification for including, attached one is quite old.

Now a little update:
1.set WenQuanYi Zen Hei as default/preferential chinese fonts.
2.change order 66 to 41, before the fontconfig file (started with 44) of WenQuanYi Zen Hei font.

Another update: mainly finetuning some commonly-used Chinese fonts.

Attached my update:
1. Add font alias for simsun/宋体.

Status: not implemented. Version 2.6.0-2 in extra. No package in testing.

Can you please take this up with upstream? The configuration changes upstream with every fontconfig release, so I'm not happy with specific patching or adding additional config that could conflict with upstream config.
