the thinkpad package from the Extra repo is ancient. The module is compiled for 2.6.12, and the PKGCONF even lacks an "arch=(i686)" line. The PKGCONF apparently has not been touched in 20 months, the other files are two years old already.

Yeah, I just adopted it and plan to update it soon, but I have little idea what it actually provides.

Wrong place for this comment, but should we talk about developing a system where users can "subscribe" to certain packages and get priority access to the updates to test for us before we release? Would also work for things like nvidia/ati/wifi drivers, etc. Packages would need X votes before being released into current/extra.

Comment hijacking!

I'm getting there. I have this mostly scripted now to react to CVS commits.

it this package worth to be kept in Extra? Or should it go to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Package_Cleanup ?
Comment by Denis Grelich (DenisG) - Friday, 18 May 2007, 17:46 GMT
There definitely should be a package for it. Every thinkpad user (who does not use the thinkpad kernel) probably wants this, as these modules provide access to the additional features of the thinkpad notebooks (like the extra buttons or the thinklight.)

Those extra features work fine for me... as far as I know I just needed nvram and ibm_acpi to get 'tpb' working (which does the whole OSD thing). Part of the reason I didn't update this yet is that I actually have no idea what it does.

1) there is tp_smapi which is recommended instead of tpctl/thinkpad packages:
"This module provides battery information for models produced since 2001 and possibly earlier, and additional features for models produced since 2003"
- maybe it's worth to move it to Extra, and move those oldies to AUR.
2) tpctl and thinkpad packages "worked on older ThinkPad models but are now obsolete: the drivers no longer build (with the latest Linux versions)". so I don't know if the latest version 4.17 and 6.0 will build.

Could you add some information to tell users who just
pacman -S thinkpad
And finally can't work because their kernel is more newer now.

I would add the info... except for the fact that Roman just pointed out that this package is dead. I will be deleting it when I get a chance
