When using console font lat1-08.psfu.gz in rc.conf and "nvidia" in xorg.conf, then after the xserver starts, the consoles go double-lined. The lines are interlaced by empty lines, so that effectively only the first few lines are visible on the screen.

Also Ctrl-Alt-F1 only works in KDE and not when KDM or ICEWM is showing.

What happens if you use another font or driver?
Comment by Anton (gerenuk81) - Friday, 13 April 2007, 23:52 GMT
"lat1-16.psfu.gz" as font or "nv" as driver make it work again.
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Saturday, 14 April 2007, 09:21 GMT
you see, the difference is that lat1-16 is 16 pixels hight while lat1-08's height is only 8 pixels.
do you have LINES envvar set to something?
Comment by Anton (gerenuk81) - Saturday, 14 April 2007, 12:55 GMT
LINES is always set to "50" as it should be for lat1-08
The problem only occurs if
I set lat1-08 and I use nvidia (unlike nv) and I start X11

I think I only modified rc.conf and used nvidia-xconfig. The rest is ArchLinux default.
What else could I check?

I can't actually check if non-KDE xstartup gives the same behaviour, because only with KDE I can switch to consoles
with Ctrl-Alt-F1 :(

status with the latest nvidia/xorg?
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Friday, 11 January 2008, 13:37 GMT
also note that COLUMNS and LINES are no longer set in /etc/profile (in filesystem package in Testing)
Comment by Anton (gerenuk81) - Friday, 18 January 2008, 14:37 GMT
Still double lined.

I updated some time ago to
xorg 11R7.0-1
nvidia 100.14.19-5 (nvidia logo also displayed at startup)
LINES=50 COLUMNS=80 (shown by export on that console)

I set in rc.conf:
CONSOLEFONT=lat1-08.psfu.gz
CONSOLEMAP=

Before the xserver everything is normal.

Is xorg the (enough) latest?
Not sure about updating. After the last update I had a (SATA) kernel panic probably due to missing dependency of kinit-extra.
Also it took me a while to find out, that the old xorg.conf had to be recreated.

xorg is an old dummpy package (it's empty, it just pulls other packages), what's your xorg-server version?
Could you try if nvidia-169.07-1 from Testing fixes your issue?
Comment by Anton (gerenuk81) - Saturday, 19 January 2008, 00:21 GMT
X Server is
xorg-server 1.4-5

What's the best way to access testing packages?
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Saturday, 19 January 2008, 07:48 GMT
add testing repo to the _end_ of pacman.conf (so it won't take precedence before core&extra) then -Sy and -S testing/nvidia
Comment by Anton (gerenuk81) - Monday, 21 January 2008, 03:13 GMT
still double-lined.

luckily the required kernel26 update didn't break any setup.
it would be convenient if testing/nvidia had testing/nvidia-utils as a dependency.
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Monday, 21 January 2008, 07:41 GMT
That's possible when you enable [testing] before core/extra, but just temporary, and don't do -Su to not pull other packages.

Anyway, I think there's nothing we can do with this bug, because nvidia is a binary driver. :-/

Is this resolved?
Comment by Anton (gerenuk81) - Friday, 02 May 2008, 14:35 GMT
After reinstalling all my archlinux (just kernel update broke the boot process) I found that with
nvidia 169.12-2
it is still double lined.

What's the status with the most recent nvidia?
Comment by Greg (dolby) - Monday, 21 July 2008, 18:00 GMT
Can you please make a bug report on xorg and see where that leads? I dont see how the Archlinux developers can solve this.
Comment by Jan de Groot (JGC) - Tuesday, 22 July 2008, 06:38 GMT
This bug should be reported to nvidia instead, I haven't seen this with any other xorg driver. The xorg team will also close it because it's related to binary drivers.
