After upgrading the system to the new 2.6.19 kernel and the new nvidia drivers, X fails to start due to nvidia drivers.
'nv' driver works fine, installing the drivers from nvidia.org doesn't solve and has the same problem.
I've been upgrading the system meanwhile to make sure if the new updates solved this issue or not (wich sadly didn't).
Here's the Xorg.0.log -> http://pastebin.archlinux.org/957
The problem seems to be related to this line specifically: (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x00000624)

xorg.conf (if needed) -> http://pastebin.archlinux.org/958

Try if xorg.conf generated with X -configure works.
Comment by L (Grimn) - Tuesday, 23 January 2007, 10:00 GMT
Already tried, the xorg.conf is the same. I don't think the problem is in xorg.conf but in the drivers itself.
I also tried with nvidia-xconfig.

Nvidia drivers works fine for me.
What is your videocard model and what exact nvidia package and version are you using?
Comment by L (Grimn) - Tuesday, 23 January 2007, 10:23 GMT
Geforce 5700 FX, I checked and it's supported by this package (instead of beyond for instance)
The nvidia package I'm using is the latest, 1.0.9631-1 (released on 2006-12-09)

I've found a thread (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=29087&highlight=) of someone that had the same issue with the new drivers, the solution he found was to install version 9029 of nvdia drivers from nvidia.com.
Unfortunely that solution didn't work for me :|
So I really think this might be a bug since some people can't use the new drivers (perharps it's related to a specific series of nvidia cards but I'm not sure since the other perosn with issues didn't say wich card he has, mine's a Geforce FX 5700 card).
Whatever I do I still get the blank screen and that Xorg.0.log with the WAIT signals form the nvdia.

Please try 1.0.9746 drivers in TESTING. (those are built for 2.6.20)
Comment by L (Grimn) - Tuesday, 06 February 2007, 17:19 GMT
Thanks, should I also install kernel 2.6.20?
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Tuesday, 06 February 2007, 17:31 GMT
Yes, they will work with 2.6.20 only.
Comment by L (Grimn) - Tuesday, 06 February 2007, 18:01 GMT
Ok, I upgraded the system using the repository testing so it has kernel 2.6.20 and nvidia drivers 1.0.9746 but unfortunely it still doesn't work and gives the same problem.
Here's Xorg log: http://pastebin.archlinux.org/1235

Upgraded the system again also with the new kernel release (this time current) and installed nvidia drivers again (checked and they support my card) but still the problem stays :(

I have the same problem, too, since I updated my arch (current/extra). Seems to be an issue related to the kernel 2.6.20 only, beause I also tried to downgrade the nvidia-drivers to the last version, but Xorg does not start either then. My "workaround" was to install the xf86-video-nv package and change Driver --> "nvidia" to "nv" in xorg.conf to get very poor X at least.
This is when propritary shit meets bleeding edge...
Comment by L (Grimn) - Sunday, 18 February 2007, 10:37 GMT
It's not the kernel, the nvidia package is built for 20 but if downgrade both it must be ok
Comment by Holger Jorra (Trac3R) - Sunday, 18 February 2007, 12:40 GMT
That's right, I've downgraded both and it works again. I want to mention that I use a GF4200ti, which is actually a supported device as you can see here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html
So if this driver is build for 2.6.20, why does it not work? And why this hasn't been checked in testing and what has this malware to do with current? I'm grateful that 2.6.19 and the old driver are still in the repos, but since I don't believe that there be further security updates for 19 in Arch, this can only be a temporary solution.
BTW, is there a stable release of Arch (not release!)? I mean in other distros "current" means what happens here - maybe parts of your system don't run properly anymore for the reason of using the newest packages.

That list is out of date. Check /usr/share/doc/nvidia/supported-cards.txt or http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9746/README/appendix-a.html for an up to date list.
Comment by Holger Jorra (Trac3R) - Sunday, 18 February 2007, 14:20 GMT
Thanks brain0, in that list my card is supported by legacy-1.0-96xx-drivers now. But how the other list can be outdated, if I just made what's written in the head of the page:
For the most complete and accurate listing of supported GPUs, please see the Supported Products List, available from the NVIDIA Linux x86 Graphics Driver download page. Please go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html, follow the Archive link under the Linux x86 heading, follow the link for the 1.0-9746 driver, and then go to the Supported Products List.
However, there is no nvidia-legacy-1.0-96xx driver in the extra repository, except the one that only works with 2.6.19. Would someone please explain this to me?
Comment by Holger Jorra (Trac3R) - Sunday, 18 February 2007, 14:40 GMT
K, it's called nvidia-96xx and works. Guess this is a hint to buy another Card - from another manufacturer. ;)
Comment by L (Grimn) - Sunday, 18 February 2007, 22:35 GMT
Well I still have this problem and my videocard IS supported so I'm stuck because of nvidia drivers :(
Comment by Thomas Bächler (brain0) - Tuesday, 20 February 2007, 09:26 GMT
Would you please STOP confusing me by adding comments to this bug report that are unrelated to the original problem. This bug is NOT about your inability to read the hints after the nvidia 9631->9746 update, but about the X server not starting any more with nvidia 9631 and newer.
