Hi!

I just tried the latest samba package (3.0.23D-2). When starting the daemon, I have the following message:
"/usr/sbin/smbd: error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

I then installed fam and restarted the daemon: everything is working.

Maybe fam should be a dependency, unless there is a way to disable it while building the package.

No, fam is not required by samba or any of its dependencies.
What pacman -Qi fam shows in "Required By" field?
Comment by Roman Kyrylych (Romashka) - Thursday, 04 January 2007, 19:38 GMT
ah, my pacman -Qi question was silly, in fact.
I have samba running with fam installed anyway (because it's requiref by gnome-vfs).
Can someone who use sambe without fam confim this?

the same happened to my home server:

[root@muloserver pigi]# /etc/rc.d/samba restart
:: Stopping Samba Server [DONE]
:: Starting Samba Server [BUSY] /usr/sbin/smbd: error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[FAIL]

then I installed fam, and samba now works again.

Same on office server. No need for GUI so no fam installed. Failed on missing libfam.so.0. Had to restore back to samba-3.0.23D-1

samba 3.0.23D-3 is out with fam as a dependency, i think we can close this bug now.

i would say fam needs to be removed, it isn't usefull anymore.
Comment by Sébastien (sebcactus) - Friday, 05 January 2007, 11:14 GMT
I agree with Arjan, if it is possible to remove fam, it would be better :)

I'm always positive for less (not very needed) dependencies for anything.

It depends on it samba can do file alternation monitoring without fam. If you serve files from a shared linux/windows environment, where your filesystem is exported as both NFS and SMB, windows clients won't get notified about file updates if samba doesn't support either fam or inotify.

Ah, nice feature. Though notify would be better, IMHO, but that's on samba devs side.
