There's been a lot of users complaining about rendering problems with the new freetype2 (2.2.1-1),

There are workarounds posted, but that's all they really are. the fonts should look fine out of the box, and they did with 2.1.10-3

The fonts still remain significantly distorted with 2.2.1. The problem is much more apparent with greek letters. Please have a look at: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=165912#165912 A quick guess would be that the bytecode interpreter is completely broken under 2.2.1.
