With alsa 1.0.10 package (alias 1.0.11rc4) i have not problem run all ok.
Today i have update alsa-lib at 1.0.11 after reload kde, my cpu go to overload ( artsd demon 65% system)

My system has a onboard VIA8235 sound card.

AthlonXP 1800+ 512MBDDR
Kernel 2.6.16.9
Kde 3.5.2

iam returned to alsa-lib 1.0.10 for resolve the problem.

Same problem here on my FujiutsuSiemens-Computers Amilo 2030 since yesterday. artsd crashes with a cpu overload.
