The xscreensaver 4.23-2 package won't start in KDE 3.5.1 at
the desginated time set by user unless the following is
added to the ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc file:
DPMS-dependent=false |

All I can do at this point is refer you to a couple of threads that talk about the same problem.
What they experienced is the same as myself.

I'm now using kde 3.5.3 and the DPMS-dependent=false line no longer helps.

In this topic, a binary (libkdeinit_kdesktop.so) created from the most up to date kde sources appears to have solved the problem. If you check out the link to megaflexdestiny.net, the binary is based on the latest sources for kdebase.
I tried to use the binary from megaflexdestiny.net, but it doesn't work with Arch Linux. Actually, it breaks most of the desktop, which is not surprising. Maybe a rebuild of kdebase specifically for Arch Linux will do the trick?
The upgrade to kdebase 3.5.3-4 has corrected the problem with the screensaver. I have my screensaver set to run after 5 minutes of inactivity and to require a password 60 seconds after that. Both settings have been tested and are working correctly.
Tpowa, thank you very much!
Much appreciated and thanks.
