Obviously, the bftpd author messed this one up. There shouldn't be a Makefile in the source package, nor should there be config.cache file. The configure script uses the values cached in the config.cache file, make install fails because configure assumes that install is in /usr/bin, which it isn't.

Removing the config.cache file before running configure will build the package properly.

The install target in Makefile.in has these lines:

touch /var/log/bftpd.log
chmod 644 /var/log/bftpd.log
mkdir -p /var/run/bftpd
chmod 755 /var/run/bftpd

Shouldn't the paths be prefixed with $(DESTDIR)?

Reopened - according to Thomas Bächler (brain0), this problem is not solved, and his fix (above) resolves it.
