The newt package currently available in extra is actually
newt-perl, or "Perl bindings for Red Hat newt library", as
the enclosed man page puts it.Essentially, it does not
include libnewt, required for developing and using newt
applications. I have had some difficulty locating the newt
source code, as there does not seem to be a dedicated
website. In the end, I got it here:
http://devel.santafelinux.com/source/newt-0.51.6/newt-0.51.6.tar.gz I have created a PKGBUILD and successfully compiled and installed newt, but I am reluctant to add it to the AUR while the perl-bindings package is in extra, using the newt name. |

(I can't remember why I didn't use this the first time...)
Anyway, the original question is still unresolved.
Would it be a big deal to rename the official package "newt-perl"?
Cause it has never been updated in 2 years... source unavailable.. etc..
libnewt, as provided by my PKGBUILD, is required by partimage, which is in the aur.
the perl-newt source contains an (outdated: version 0.30) copy of newtlib but does not install it. Most other distributions patched perl-newt to use an up2date version of newtlib installed as a seperate package. I would prefer this solution.
