- I installed firefox. It worked fine.
- I installed gnome for gedit.
- Firefox's downloads and save-image by right clicking stopped working.
- I uninstalled gnome.
- Firefox started working again.

(I am sorry, I don't have the output when starting firefox from the terminal, I was stressed. Also, the problem is active while in fluxbox or openbox. I didn't start gnome... It would be too troublesome. The same problem was there for mozilla).

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  Fixed in 1.5 (possible fix would be one of those patches from fedora :))

I have noticed that firefox goes through a list of download managers when it boots up. So, it might be that it finds the gnome-whatever-dl-manager and that it attempts to start it up. Firefox does freeze, but I have a PII-333Mhz machine and this might, in fact, be the main problem.

Hmmm, I don't use gnome. Any ideas, JGC?

Does the recent 1.0.6 package in testing solve your problems? Patched loads of things into firefox for this release.

No, it does not. However, I have waited for some 15 minutes. When I came back, the "Save Image As..." was still selected, but when I clicked "X" to close the program (didn't work) and then right clicked randomly inside firefox (oh how much I owe to random pointless clicking) the save/browse window jumped up! When I have repeated the save image in that session it worked right away. So I guess something is starting up.

Now, when I have removed gnome (I didnt restart firefox after I deleted every component to find the pulpitrator), the save/browse windows appear right away. I.e. the problem is, as before, gone.

What happens if you delete these files from your system:
libgnomeui /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/filesystems/libgnome-vfs.a
libgnomeui /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/filesystems/libgnome-vfs.la
libgnomeui /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/filesystems/libgnome-vfs.so

Edit:
I think it's the Gnome-vfs GTK filechooser plugin that acts up with some windowmanagers that don't implement certain things.

I removed the files, and the problem was still present.

Then, hovever I deleted gnome virtual file server and all its dependencies:
268 pacman -R gnome-menus
269 pacman -R eel
270 pacman -R gedit
273 pacman -R libgnome
274 pacman -R libbonoboui
275 pacman -R libgnomeui
276 pacman -R gnome-desktop
279 pacman -R libgnome
280 pacman -R gnome-vfs

They weren't deleted in that order tho.

Now, there is >no< problem. The saves work!

Also, the only thing different when I run top:
# top -u perun
6360 perun 16 0 5612 2220 1664 S 0.0 1.8 0:00.30 gconfd-2

Just thought I'd throw it in.

Try replacing fam with gamin (from the AUR). This fixed the problem for me with no other changes.

I'm thinking that the official switch needs to be made to gamin.

This will be done anyways when moving everything from testing to current/extra.

I'm now in a different country (making testing impossible), but I have fam, gnome and firefox. I do not, however, have the problem...

Hm, I will do some testing this weekend, because I did something (I guess) and I have the same problem.

Same problem on xfce. You were right, when I remove gnome-vfs, the problem perishes. Sorry I'm not very informative.

Debian has a package fixing this, I think
mozilla-firefox-gnome-support
"This is an extension to Mozilla Firefox that allows it to use protocol handlers from Gnome-VFS, such as smb or sftp, and other Gnome integration features"

What happens when you do "rpcinfo -p localhost", does it hang or does it return instantly with either an error about connection refused or a print of running rpc services?

How is firefox 1.5 doing? Can I close this bug?
Comment by Andre P (acetylcholine) - Wednesday, 11 January 2006, 15:05 GMT
I just switched back to Arch from Ubutntu (don't even ask)...

This bug is squished, no problems in 1.5...
