Description:
On all container formats I've tested (avi and mkv), mplayer will randomly halt at the slightest disturbance/input:
. fullscreen / non-fullscreen
. modify aspect-ratio
. skip forward / skip-backward
. pause (problems starting)
. switch languages
. randomly
Only by "jarring" mplayer can it be coerced to resume. "Jarring" includes
. fullscreen
. skip forward / backwards
As skipping around the file usually causes mplayer to halt, i feel like I'm robotically tossing dice, waiting for that final skip on which mplayer will resume.

Oh, and as far as I know this problem is unique to Arch Linux. And maybe to me.

i know that are some issues when using alsa on top of pulse so rebuild mplayer to get pulse support and see if is helping.

Thanks for the suggestion, it was spot-on: the rebuilt mplayer with pulse support no longer stutters, and I can pause/unpause without incident.

So, when is pulseaudio moving from community to extra...? :)

As a bonus, my mplayer is now also linked against: nas, directfb, openjpeg, schroedinger etc

One concern from namcap: should openjpeg from extra be listed as a dependency?
Comment by Ionut Biru (wonder) - Sunday, 02 May 2010, 22:11 GMT
for schroedinger is a feature request opened. the others i don't care as nobody requested and i suppose nobody use them. (pulse is not in that list)
