An additional info:
Dvd drives are managed by udev and are not listed in fstab.

I had same problem but I've solved it by modifying /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file. I've added in the HOOKS line 'pata' so this line looks now like this:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata sata filesystems

I'll try it, thanks. So I think that the archwiki is wrong, because it says that "pata" should be added only if your root device is on a pata disk and it's not my case.

Ok, it seems to solve the problem for me but one of my friend have an old ide controller so he is using the old ide hook and not the pata, I don't think it's a good idea adding pata in this case.
This is the relevant parts of the mkinicpio.conf file:

MODULES="ide-pci-generic pdc202xx_old via82cxxx scsi_mod"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata keymap filesystems"

Any idea on how to fix this situation?

I have the same problem. However, I am also unable to read disks as well.

Take a look into this, please.

Ed1t: I already had the pata hook, and it fixes nothing.

I confirm the problem only when a disk is inserted. CD drive LITE-ON LTR48327S, ArchLinux i686, all packages are updated.

I also have the same issue with a lite-on drive and also cannot read the discs.
This error shows in everything.log:

It appears a patch for this issue has been submitted to udev

The patch is supposedly committed, status?

I still have the problem after doing a full upgrade yesterday.
Comment by Thomas Dziedzic (tomd123) - Saturday, 05 June 2010, 14:00 GMT
ah sorry for misleading you, the current udev (just checked the code) in [testing] has the fixes, not the one in core :)
Comment by Smith Dhumbumroong (zodmaner) - Saturday, 05 June 2010, 18:01 GMT
Just upgrade to udev version 157-1 from Testing repository and I can no longer reproduce the problem! So I guess we can call it fixed. :D

PS. Thank you for finally found a fix for this bug. It have been annoying me for almost a year.
