After updating all packages on my KDE box and my Gnome box and then rebooting with the 2.6.32.4 kernel, my USB external SATA drive takes several seconds longer to mount when hotplugged, and there is then a 30 to 40 second delay before the contents are read and displayed on the screen using the file manager.

Before the upgrade, the drive would mount far quicker, and the contents of drive were displayed almost instantly.

To test this, I installed the older 2.6.30.6 kernel (and nVidia) and things returned to the normal speed. To make sure it was the difference in the kernels only, I repeated the test 3 different times with each kernel, and got the same results with each test.

Using the older kernel also stopped all the Dolphin crashes and freezes that were happening under KDE 4.3.2 with the newer kernel, and it stopped some strange unmounting issues with the external drive under both desktop environments.

Looks like another linux 2.6.31 bug. Please report to upstream if not already reported (LKML and/or bugzilla) this is the best way to resolve these type of issues. Thanks.

Just want to update this bug report to say that the new kernel version 2.6.31.5 that was just dropped into the core repositories seems to have fixed the external drive delays described above.

Thank you.

Whoops... sorry to have to post on this again, but I spoke too soon above and have found that the same issues with the newer 2.6.31.5 kernel. Reverting back to 2.6.30.6 fixes these issues. Hopefully the next kernel revision will work better. Thanks.
