Description:

after updating to kernel 2.6.31.3 my laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (xf86-video-ati 6.12.4) freezes during boot. Switching off with power button is needed. With no settings (KMS switches to native resolution) it freeses when X is suposed to start just login promt is displayed, though logging in is impossible. With KMS disabled it freezes when udev is busy or when mounting filesystems. Tried with framebuffer disabled. Tried nomodeset at kernel line.

With 2.6.30 everything goes fine.

Additional info:
Logs shows no errors, probably nothing is written to them before freeze.

Steps to reproduce:
Upgrade to kernel 2.6.31.3 with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 and reboot.

I also have a ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (xf86-video-ati 6.12.4) and similar problems:
With no settings (radeon in Modules of mkinitcpio.conf), the system hangs when loading modules; after that power button is the only way to go...
Didn't yet try it with KMS disabled.
Didn't want to hijack this thread, hope it helps!

This also happens with ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 (my system is a Thinkpad R40). The display flashes and then everything freezes right after the "processing udev events" line.

when the display flashes you still have kms enabled! disable it.

After yesterday update I have problems with radeonhd driver, but with radeon all is fine.
All GUI draws very slow, but glxgears FPS the same with both drivers.

Hardware:
Video: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV516 [Mobility Radeon X1350]
Notebook: HP8320s

After having updated to kernel 2.6.31.4 my system works again with kms disabled.

the initial bugreport says udev freezes when loading the module in non-kms mode. try to add intel_agp module in front of radeon in your rc.conf. so far no further comment from you.

for the rest the issue seems solved.

Sorry, I'll test it tomorrow, as I get to the machine.

Nice. With 2.6.31.4 disabling KMS works, enabling KMS late works and enabling KMS early works too. So I guess we can consider this solved.
