In my opinion when referring to whole system, 'GNU/Linux' should be used instead of 'Linux', or as it is now, an inconsistent mixture of both. This includes the artwork, but _not_ the name of the distro itself (Arch Linux).
An example of inconsistency is the main page, where the 'Welcome to arch' box uses 'Linux', but when you click on 'Read more' it reads GNU/Linux.

This task depends upon

I wanted to ask about this myself. When i was copying the official guide to the wiki, the reference there was GNU/Linux. The same uses the article announcement on distrowatch.
I didnt because its a dumb issue. But consistency is nice to have.
Comment by Allan McRae (Allan) - Thursday, 19 February 2009, 21:14 GMT
For consistency, it should be Arch Linux. See  FS#7576
Comment by Øyvind Heggstad (Mr.Elendig) - Thursday, 19 February 2009, 22:02 GMT
Allan, I have seen that one, and "Arch Linux" would not work
Example:
"Arch Linux is an Arch Linux distribution" :p

I'm not talking about changing the name on the distro, I'm talking about:
"You've reached the website for Arch Linux, a lightweight and flexible Linux® distribution", and when you click 'Learn more':
"Arch Linux is an independently developed, i686/x86-64 general purpose GNU/Linux distribution"
Comment by Øyvind Heggstad (Mr.Elendig) - Thursday, 19 February 2009, 22:15 GMT
Bha, the flyspray needs an edit function :p

It's more or less the same as the "Arch Linux" vs "ArchLinux" that was ranted about on the forum a while ago.
(But I do believe that GNU do deserve the recognition that comes with using GNU/Linux instead of Linux (Arch Linux is fine by me btw), but that's not the main point I wanted to bring up.)

According to  FS#7576  the GNU part has to go from the about page. Its mentioned twice there. Are there any other references that you know of?
Comment by Øyvind Heggstad (Mr.Elendig) - Thursday, 19 February 2009, 22:57 GMT
dolby,  FS#7576  was a suggestion to rename arch itself from "Arch Linux" to "Arch GNU/Linux", and that's not what this one is about. I'm perfectly happy with the name "Arch Linux".
Comment by Greg (dolby) - Friday, 20 February 2009, 07:06 GMT
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way also has extensive references to GNU/Linux

Heres an uber awesome patch for getting rid of GNU in the about page. :)
Comment by Jules (Misfit138) - Wednesday, 06 May 2009, 16:40 GMT
For consistency, -2- and only 2 very -small- changes must be made:
1. Thayer's Arch Linux logo at the top right should be made to read, "Arch Linux A simple, lightweight GNU/Linux distribution."
2. The main page should be made to read
"Welcome to Arch!

You've reached the website for Arch Linux, a lightweight and flexible GNU/Linux distribution that tries to Keep It Simple.

Currently we have official packages optimized for the i686 and x86-64 architectures. We complement our official package sets with a community-operated package repository that grows in size and quality each and every day.

Our strong community is diverse and helpful, and we pride ourselves on the range of skillsets and uses for Arch that stem from it. Please check out our forums and mailing lists to get your feet wet. Also glance through our wiki if you want to learn more about Arch. "

The Learn More tab has already been fixed (by Aaron I believe) to include mention of GNU.

On what basis though? The link Allan posted clearly states that it was a developer decision for Arch not to be mentioned as GNU/Linux.
Comment by Jules (Misfit138) - Monday, 11 May 2009, 14:34 GMT
I have read the fs link, which Allan posted. It certainly seems unanimous; we all agree that the name of the distro should remain Arch Linux.
However, for consistency, Arch Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution, (arguably 70-80% GNU, much less than 10% Linux Kernel) and should be described as such in the 2 places I mentioned above.
This small change would make the whole site consistent.
Again, I believe Arch Linux is and always should remain 'Arch Linux', but should be described as 'a GNU/Linux distribution' in subtexts and elsewhere, for consistency and accuracy.

@ Øyvind: Flyspray has comment editing possibility, but it's disabled for non-devs.

@Aaron: couldn't just add you to the notification list (yet another (in)famous Flyspray's bug), so assigned it.

If something uses GNU's license it doesn't mean its gnu... In my case 70-80% KDE, so KDE/Linux? Be sane... Gnu's fanboys...
Comment by Aaron Griffin (phrakture) - Wednesday, 25 November 2009, 22:56 GMT
Changing the about page is fine with me. The logo is up to Thayer. Do you think it'd work ok to stick "GNU/" in there? Or should we fiddle with the slogan on there?
Comment by Thayer Williams (thayer) - Wednesday, 25 November 2009, 23:16 GMT
Hrmm good question. I could certainly rework the logo to include gnu/linux (though it may look better without the slash). Personally, I'm one of those people who do refer to it as GNU/Linux when speaking formally about the operating system. Casually, it's just Linux. There have been many discussions about this on the forums and it's usually a touchy subject after x number of posts, but then again you're The Man. If you're OK with it, I'll update the logo.
Comment by Allan McRae (Allan) - Wednesday, 25 November 2009, 23:28 GMT
Can we also add BSD to the logo at about 12% of the font size:

> pacman -Si $(pacman -Slq core) | grep License | grep GPL | wc -l
143

> pacman -Si $(pacman -Slq core) | grep License | grep BSD | wc -l
17

No, I am not being serious... :P

Excellent news. It will be a most welcome and agreeable update. :)

status of this? Can be closed? (Beyond ironies :P)

I plan to implement the changes later this week, but I'll leave it open until it's done.
