Description:
The USB image for installing uses GRUB, which is an issue on some machines. If the USB image is used on a machine that in incompatible with GRUB, the installation fails. The only way to get around this that I figured out was to use unetbootin to set up a syslinux install disk, using an old release of Arch (2008.03).

Ideally, there would either be another USB image that uses a different bootloader (syslinux or lilo work fine on my machine), or some other install option.

Steps to reproduce:
Install USB image onto USB drive.
Attempt to boot on system that is incompatible with GRUB (i.e. Dell Optiplex 320)

Arch Linux already provides 10(!) different images http://dev.archlinux.org/~aaron/archiso/ . I dont disagree with what you say. Something like this would be ideal but it doesnt seem to work, at least currently : http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13213 .

Don't the new isos all offer isolinux?

Yes, they do, I should have requested closure on this bug when the 2009.02 release came out.
