Description:

Whenever I insert a video DVD in gnome, the pop-up window requesting which action to perform (e.g. read, burn, ...) is displayed twice (one hiding the other).

Also, if I right-click on th desktop icon, the actions (read, burn, ... ) are duplicated.

In my experience, this does not happen:
- with other types of media (audio cd, vfat usb sticks)
- with data dvd
- in KDE
- in ubuntu intrepid and fedora 10 (up to date)

See also http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=58863

Sorry to not specifically target a component, this could be spread in hal, nautilus or gnome-volume manager. I can't also tell when this started, as I just recently installed arch + gnome.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
Fresh (and quasi out-of the box) install on x86_64, up to date as 02/06/2009.

* config and/or log files etc.
N/A

Steps to reproduce:
Insert a video DVD.
1. see the request for action displayed twice
2. right click on the dvd desktop icon and see the actions displayed twice

Do you happen to have a line in your fstab that refers to your optical drive? If you delete it and restart HAL, does it solve this issue?
Comment by paul (pwt) - Friday, 06 February 2009, 16:05 GMT
Wow, This is fast.
Yes, I have a line in fstab. I'll test this ASAP. Not with my laptop right now...

Do you have both brasero and nautilus-cd-burner installed? Latest version of brasero integrates with nautilus also now.

Another thing: do you have gnome-volume-manager installed?

To Glenn,

This does not do the trick.

To Jan,

I will get bak to you shortly.

nautilus-cd-burner, brasero and gnome=volume-manager are all installed.

Removing gnome-volume-manager doesn't change anything.
Removing brasero doesn't change anything.
Removing nautilus-cd-burner is not an option (required by rhythmbox and other packages).

While experimenting with the new hal/policykit/consolekit setup in different com
bination of login/session/window/desktop manager I was able to see the popup dialog launched two and three times! Idem for "autorun" dialogs and the nautilus header (don't know how to name it, see the attached image - it doesn't show the problem).

No duplicates in my usual X session: inittab -> kdm (from kdemod-legacy) -> openbox session (with gnome-settings-daemon and start-kdeinit).

Duplicates with: inittab -> gdm -> openbox session.

Tomorrow I'll take the time to write a full detailed report. I have also an Arch installation with kde4.

Two more interesting screenshots.

nau2.jpg:
inittab -> gdm -> gnome

nau3.jpg:
/etc/rc.d/gdm -> gnome

wtf! the only difference seems to stay in the inittab --nodaemon option.

Nothing more to say.
After further tests I can see that only gdm triggers the bug.
If gdm is started from inittab or as a daemon through rc.conf I get two launch windows and two nautilus header.
If gdm is started from the command line (as "/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon" or "/etc/rc.d/gdm start") I get three copies of them.
The desktop environment is ininfluent.

Since gnome volume manager and nautilus have duplicate functionality. As a temp solution renaming /usr/bin/nautilus-autorun-software to /usr/bin/bad-nautilus-autorun-software removes the notifications and gnome volume manager still will let you set up autorun actions in the Configuration editor.

i can confirm this behaviour on gnome 2.26 [using gdm too]; disabling "Volume Manager" from "Startup Applications" doesn't help, and i have nothing regarding the cd/dvd drive in fstab
i use archlinux x86_64 uptodate as of today [15 apr 2009]
i don't know why this bug-report has still has the "Unconfirmed" status, nor do i know how to change that
i would like to find another way of fixing this rather than proposed file [ /usr/bin/nautilus-autorun-software ] renaming as i don't want to get any system/package_management inconsistency by messing with files pacman has in its evidence

regards

Yes, this bug needs to be confirmed. I am also subscribed to  FS#13244 . The issues are the same. Could a Dev possibly merge these two bugs and perhaps give some feedback?
Comment by me (kilz) - Friday, 29 May 2009, 14:19 GMT
In my last comment I suggested a way to stop the issue, but it isnt a good idea as it causes other issues.

Hi, reinstalled arch lately, the bug is still existing.
Comment by paul (pwt) - Wednesday, 16 September 2009, 17:00 GMT
Since I opened this  bug 7  months ago, and because there seems to be some echo with users, could we (us, users) kindly ask Arch Devs if one of them has ever encountered this? It is my humble opinion that this bug should be ugraded to "confirmed", and that some form of follow-up be made.

sure.

This is a bug in GDM. This doesn't happen anymore after updating to gdm 2.28.0.

Great. Thanks for the answer.
