Description:
Saturday dec 6 I upgraded to the latest versions of gtk2, cairo, and pango. I use Xfce and compiz. After upgrade, the text beneath the icons on my desktop is invisible. However, when I press F5 on the desktop to have it redrawn, the text quickly flashes. It is as if the background color is drawn on top of the text, instead of the other way around. Additionally, in gVim, the same happens: where text is supposed to be, I only see the background color. Resizing the window makes text visible, but it quickly disappears again. I tried to find help on the forum but did not get any replies (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=460297#p460297). Another Xfce user has a similar problem with PyPanel (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=60342). I was wondering whether some Xfce packages need a recompile against the new gtk?

This happens both with Compiz and Xfwm.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Xfce, with either compiz of Xfwm4 as window manager
2. Create a desktop launcher with a description
3. The desktop launcher is created. The description is supposed to be below the launcher icon, but only the area where the text is supposed to be is visible and no text is shown.
4. Start gVim. In the welcome screen, text is supposed to be drawn. Instead, only the background of the text is visible.

See screenshots.

Package versions:
- gtk2: 2.14.5-1
- cairo: 1.8.4-1
- pango: 1.22.3-2
- xfce packages: 4.4.3-1
- thunar: 0.9.3-1
Hope this is all that is needed .. I have latest versions of all packages on december 9.

Could be related to your videocard configuration also. Please also attach your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log.

See attachments. I tried uncommenting all options from the video card Device-section in xorg.conf, but that didn't help. My video card is an Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440 btw; I use nvidia's 96xx drivers.

Try xf86-video-nv or xf86-video-vesa. This is a known problem in the nvidia-96xx drivers that we're currently using to support xorg-server 1.5.

Thanks a lot. The link you provided had a link to a forum post which had a link to the nvidia-forums which suggested to use anti-aliasing and subpixel hinting for fonts. Anti-aliasing was enabled already; enabling sub-pixel-hinting (RGB) in Xfce's User Interface settings solved the issue for me.
