Description:
I'd like to request a way for the wiki to support footnotes like the ones which can be found in Wikipedia. After some research I've found out that this can be accomplished by installing the Cite extension [1] for MediaWiki. The installation seems to be pretty straight forward [2] (just 2 steps, actually). I've also started a bbs thread [3] about this topic. Reason for closing: Won't implement
Additional comments about closing: It hasn't been implemented in 7 months, it's not gonna happen.
We like to maintain as few extensions as possible, makes maintenance much easier in the future.

Installation seems easy at a first look. But don't forget that every additional extension which is not part of the main distribution increases workloads and may lead to problems or incompatibilities with new versions of MediaWiki.
Quite some time ago, I've started a Wiki page for desktop entries [1], because although we have the standards from freedesktop.org, most users (and even developers) don't know about them, or have no interest in reading the complete standard specification(s). When referring to a standard, citing (with this extension) is quite useful, because people can quickly verify the source and check whether the wiki information is still up-to-date.
But my main reason for proposing this is because I've encountered myself a couple of times citing the same part of a standard over and over again. The cite-extension can recognize this, so even if you have e.g. 20 links spread across your complete howto, they can all be found in a compact form (if some of them are redundant, they will only be listed once) at a standardized place (AKA the bottom of the wiki page). This could IMHO seriously improve the readability of such howtos.
Hope this clarifies my intentions behind this idea.
