Hi there,

it seems that this happens only on X4500 chipsets: X crashes with a fatal error on startup and the screen goes black, but the machine doesnt freeze and i can switch to another tty etc...

Packages are the latest from testing...

xorg-server 1.5.2-3
intel-dri 7.2-1
xf86-video-intel 2.5.0-1
libdrm 2.4.0-1

...and this is already a known problem, check these posts:

Solution: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2008-October/039599.html

I have added the attached patch to the kernel26 package and X starts up again.

Well, the new intel driver also broke direct rendering again, but thats something for another bug report :)

Greetings

Jan
